The Social Impact Startup

Nov 17, 2019

Zoe Waters is the founder of Necessary Behavior, an organization that speaks out against unhealthy social norms and is focused on creating a culture of consent and promoting healthy sexuality. Through Necessary Behavior she is building an educational platform that helps to eradicate internal biases and help people better themselves. Zoe is a master-level sexual abuse advocate and prevention educator in the state of Iowa  and therefore predominantly focuses on sexual assault advocacy. The statistics are staggering - 1 in every three women, one in every four men, and one in every two transgender people have experienced sexual violence - and that is only what is reported. We need a serious cultural overhaul and that’s where Zoe’s work lies - in helping and supporting survivors, bringing education and awareness to classrooms and colleges campuses, and promoting social justice. In this episode we discuss why social justice is uncomfortable and if you are comfortable - you’re not doing enough, why cancel culture is problematic, and her advice for people wanting to make a change and don’t know where to start. This episode delves into an important topic, one of which we all need to take steps to combat. In Zoe’s words “It takes a community to break down the culture of violence we have created”.
